From the walled market town of Taroudant to the high valleys of the Anti-Atlas, this journey follows Morocco's wool road — the villages where weaving is still a way of life. We travel in a group of no more than seven, co-led by Daniela Gallenti of Madebyafous and guided throughout by Jamal Amrray of the Siroua Wool Project, whose home valleys we visit.
Expect souks and saffron, mountain gorges and mint tea, hands in the wool alongside the women who weave it — and a final breath of Marrakech before home.
ITINERARY
Day 1 — Taroudant
Arrival via Agadir and on to Taroudant, the ‘Grandmother of Marrakech’ — a walled market town without the crowds. We settle into La Maison Taroudant, our home for two nights, with a welcome dinner on the roof terrace.
Day 2 — The Souks
Taroudant’s souks with Jamal: spices, leather, silver and wool, and the workshops behind the stalls. An unhurried afternoon by the pool or in the gardens.
Day 3 — The Cedar Valley
South into the Anti-Atlas through the Cedar Valley — picnic beneath the trees, mountain villages, and our first sight of the high wool country.
Day 4 — Weaving at Tislit Gorge
Tislit Gorge, where we spend the day weaving with Khadija and the women of her cooperative — carding, spinning and knotting the Siroua wool that makes these carpets famous.
Day 5 — To Tamellakoute
Through Imghlay to the village of Tamellakoute. Two nights at Gîte Ait Mezine, a family-run mountain house with views over the valley.
Day 6 — The Weaving Workshop
A full day’s weaving workshop in Tamellakoute — Jamal’s home ground — learning the patterns and their meanings from the women who carry them.
Day 7 — Over the Mountains to Marrakech
Over the mountains to Marrakech. Evening arrival at Riad Daar Balaaroub in the medina, and dinner amid the sounds of the city.
Day 8 — The Medina & Departures
A morning in the medina — last souk finds, mint tea on a rooftop — and departures from Marrakech.
